How to Keep Your Cakes Fresh

It’s without a doubt that you put a lot of effort into baking cakes. Whether a chocolate cake for a birthday or that blueberry cake for an anniversary, you have worked for that perfect finish and taste.

Baking a cake is an art in itself. It can be a hobby, but more than anything else, a cake is a food, and like other food items cake is perishable.

Do Not Store the Cake in the Refrigerator

What comes first on your mind when you need to keep your food fresh for a long time? The answer is obviously the refrigerator. But when it comes to cake, you must not consider the refrigerator as your friend. In case you are refrigerating most of the things, then that must change. Did you know that because of the refrigerator, the cake stales faster?  When refrigerated, cake molecules recrystallize, and harden, forcing the water to come out of the surface of the cake. Just to re-iterate, Cakes stale faster when refrigerated. So, it's better to keep your cake covered in a cake box in a cool place outside the refrigerator, which helps to preserve your cake and keep it fresh.

Store Your Cakes for 1 to 3 Days

If you want to store the cake for a maximum of 3 days after baking, keep it at room temperature. Avoid heat and direct sunlight from the cake. If you have already kept the cake in the cake box, let it be in the box. Keep the cake in the box if it is to be consumed within a day. If you don’t have a cake box, an acrylic cake lid will come in handy. A great option is to use the plastic cake storage container, which has cake rests and a dome. They are readily available.

How to Freeze Cakes

Freeze the cake if you want to store it for more than 3 days. A beautiful way to keep the cake fresh is to freeze it. Wrap your cake box in layers of plastic wrap and then freeze it. The frosting can be kept in a tight container. Remove the cake from the freezer and let it be on the counter, when you want to serve it.

When to refrigerate a cake?

Usually, cakes are frosted, unfrosted, cut, or uncut, but they are excellent for several days if properly stored at room temperature. Now the question is when you should consider refrigerating the cake? If you live in the deep South and your kitchen stays hot and humid during the summers, then it is advised to cover your cake and refrigerate it. Refrigerate a cake that won’t be served for a few days. If fresh fruit or topping is used on your cake, or has a frosting with whipped cream, cover it until you are ready to serve.
